French journalist Antoine Galindo was released by Ethiopian police on Thursday after being detained for a week on charges of “conspiracy to create chaos,” according to his employer, Africa Intelligence. Galindo was arrested last Thursday while on assignment in Addis Ababa. He has since left Ethiopia and is expected to arrive in France on Friday, as stated by Quentin Botbol, the publisher of Africa Intelligence.
Human rights activists have frequently criticized Ethiopia for restricting press freedom, especially in response to critical reporting on conflicts and security issues. The New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists reported that at least eight Ethiopian journalists have been detained since April of the previous year.
In recent years, Ethiopia has expelled foreign journalists or denied them accreditation, with the last arrests of foreign journalists before Galindo occurring in 2011 when two Swedish journalists were sentenced to 11 years in prison. They were later pardoned and released.
