UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay has condemned the August 07 killing of journalist Héritier Magayanein North Kivu, Democratic Republic of the Congo.
“I condemn the murder of Héritier Magayane,” said Azoulay. “I call on the authorities to investigate this crime and bring its perpetrators to justice. Impunity must not be allowed to embolden those who use violence to stop journalists from doing their job.”
Unidentified assailants are reported to have slit the throat of Magayane, a Radio-Télévision Nationale Congolaise journalist, who hosted youth programmes that promoted peace in the region.
UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and a range of actions, notably in the framework of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
