Around 20 journalists were the targets of major police violence during last Friday’s protest in Tunis against President Kais Saied. The correspondent of three French media outlets, Libération, Jeune Afrique and RFI, was badly beaten and sprayed with gas at close range. Nothing like this has been seen in the capital since President Ben Ali’s ouster in 2011.
The day after this crackdown, RSF sounded the alarm and published a report entitled Journalism in Tunisia: hour of the truth, which highlights concerns about the president’s commitment to freedom of the press. The slowness with which the Tunisian media sector has been transformed during the past 11 years and recent political developments are now threatening media freedom, the Tunisian revolution’s leading initial achievement.
